Corbin Flats Tailings Site in Jefferson City, Montana
The Corbin Flats Tailings site is a 75-acre, historical millsite which contains 350,000 yards of mine/mill waste and contaminated soil elevated in arsenic and lead.
Although the site is private land, it has commonly been used for recreation by motorcycle/ATV riders, target shooters, and for limited cattle grazing. The site was ranked #1 on the abandoned mine priority list for the state of Montana. Olympus completed the preparation of the Voluntary Cleanup Action Plan which provided information on the site characterization, screening of reclamation alternatives, environmental requirements, criteria, or limitations (ERCLs), and engineering design. Olympus worked closely with the client and state regulatory agencies to develop a cost effective and timely site reclamation plan and represented the client and supported the regulatory agencies at public meetings for the site. This technical support aided the client in receipt of a positive record of decision for the preferred reclamation alternative and preserved the project's eligibility for a Montana state pilot funding program. The Corbin Flats Tailings site was the third mining site Voluntary Clean-up Action Plan approved by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
Olympus developed the final reclamation design, operating plan and completed the permitting for the preferred alternative. The preferred reclamation alternative is a 10.2-acre, onsite, engineered repository and 6,000 lineal feet of stream/floodplain reconstruction which will effectively protect human health and the environment.
