Lead Ore Concentrate Spill in Dillon, Montana
A truck transporting lead ore concentrate was en route to a smelter and had an accident. The lead concentrate was released into a wetlands area adjacent to the Beaverhead River. Olympus was responsible for acquiring the necessary permits including a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 404 permit, a State of Montana 3A permit, and the Montana 310 law notification for the work. Olympus mobilized to the site after the bulk of the concentrate was removed to complete the final cleanup and confirmation sampling. Impacted water and ice accumulated in the initial excavation area were excavated and pumped to a heated holding tank prior to impacted soil removal. Approximately 2,500 gallons of lead-impacted water and 35 cubic yards of lead-impacted soil were removed from the spill site and sent to the mine for disposal. Residual sediment in the water tank was containerized in 55-gallon drums and was also sent to the mine for disposal. Both field screening (X-ray fluorescence for lead) and laboratory quantitative (RCRA 8 metals) methods were used to guide and confirm, respectively, Montana Department of Environmental Quality cleanup levels. Reclamation of the impacted site included backfilling the excavated area, seeding, installation of erosion control mat, and repair of a ranch fence.
